Alpha Dogma commented on my weeds post, asking my opinion of Dame's Rocket (hesperis matronalis). I discovered Dame's Rocket the same summer I discovered first love and the delicious freedom or my first summer with a fully valid driver's license. In the rolling hills of small-town southern Ontario, freedom is spelled with a driver's license (and parents nice enough to grant access to a car).
R, my first love, enjoyed the quiet and still places of the natural world, the places that when you visit quietly you discover are not so quiet and still.

I'm so glad my wee comment prompted a whole post AND a trip down memory lane. I loved your description of the Rocket aroma. It is very enticing.
We bought our house from a forester who scavenged seeds and soil from Crown Land for the 11 perennial flower beds on the lot.
Every summer I find the plastic wrappers from cigarette packets have worked their way up through the soil. I am always finding plants emerging that are on the list of invasive plants: Knapweed. Oxeye Daisy, Orange Hawkweed, Chickweed, Common Tansy. And my least favourite and THE most pernicious: Field Horsetail.
I'm rather ruthless in pulling out these weeds, but for some reason am taken with Dame's Rocket.
Left to my own devices, I'd plant only hostas and irises. But I've decided to see who will win the war for supremacy in the front flower beds: Dame's Rocket, Horsetails or Dandelions. I'll keep you up to date.
