Fave Grey's Anatomy Quote from Last Night

Wow. It has been a REALLY long time since a new Grey's Anatomy was on.

Some discussion is in order before I give my favourite quote.

I love that Meredith snores.

And Izzy. She rather skimmed over the situation with, "When my fiance dropped dead I went a little nuts." ?!? Uh, wasn't it more like you went a little nuts and cut your fiance's L-VAT wire (or whatever it was), thus contributing to his death shortly thereafter? Mostly I'm annoyed with her. It's annoying having that cheque sit around. It's annoying that she just whines to be given more privileges.

I think the happy dance around the bag of pee could be the first such event on network television history?

I totally didn't see the Addison-Alex thing coming, but I think it could work.

And. Judging from the preview for next week's show (which I will miss because we'll be away), I was so totally right!

Ok. So without further ado, my fave quote:

Sloane to Alex: Maybe you oughtta go back to the gynie squad where life was all squishy and pink.

Don't forget. Today is the last day of Delurking Week. As you can see, I've stolen Bubandpie's picture, because I love it. And I'm also going to steal her idea and offer some questions to get the delurking going. (Thanks to the folks who delurked on my last post... it's LOVELY to meet you!)

I loved one of the questions that a commenter at B&P asked the blogger extraordinaire, so I'm going to steal it for delurkers (and of course regular commenters can answer to):

If you were going to start a new career, what would it be? (Let's pretend that length of schooling and money are not factors.)

And, another stolen question, this time from Alpha Dogma (by the way, last night I saw a trailer for a movie named after Alpha Dogma, well sort of, so she's obviously got a large following despite her new arrival. It's called Alpha Dog.)

Which celebrity would play you in a movie about your life?

I'll share my answers in a comment later...

AND, we have just heard that we will indeed be able to take our trip on Monday. Coming up next, a post about my experiences with the most ineffectual, bumbling, give it to you up the ass while you're picking up the soap bureaucracy I have ever come across...

Fave Grey's Anatomy Quote from Last Night

I almost wasn't going to bother with this, I'm so blo'd out. But this morning is a new day, and whatdya know, I feel like blogging.

My fave quote was from one of the conjoined twins, when he asked the doctor, "When you separate us, can you make his ass bigger than mine?"

I also liked it when George flipped out and bellowed, "Georgie doesn't work in this hospital. My name is Dr. O'Malley!!"

Fave Grey's Quote from Last Night

Edited to add theory of things to come.

There's two this week.

I loved the patient with the shard of glass in her heart: The doctors... hot men... they're all really hot. [pause] They are, aren't they? It's not just because I'm wearing a plate glass window?

Addison: Nooo, they're man candy.

Patient: Good. [coughs blood into a gauze pad in her hand] Okaaay... that is nasty.

And when Callie yells at Meredith: Panties, Meredith. I'm talking about the McFrickin' code of silence pair of panties I pulled off the bulletin board. Not to mention the adulterous McSex I witnessed.

You'd think I'd get sick of all the Mc references, that the joke would get tired. But somehow I don't.

I loved Yang doing the voice over in the beginning but I thought the dramatic single drum thing from time to time was a bit silly. I think I knew that Yang was gonna crack, but I was still kinda disappointed. Mind you, Burke was kind of an ass, putting a lot of blame on her. I mean, he's the attending... she's just the intern.

Updated: Ooh, that scene with the patient with the shard of glass in her hear, Addison, Sloane and Karev. I think it will soon come out that Addison got pregnant with Sloane and had an abortion when she discovered him cheating on her. I'm putting it here because if I'm right I'll get to point to this and say, "See? Can I call it or what?" And if I'm wrong, well, just forget I ever said anything.

Fave GA Quote from Last Night

George to Yang: Why are you being modest? Modest looks weird on you."

I also loved it when Callie jumped in with her own favourite car with George's brothers. But because I don't do car speak, it sorta went over my head so I can't actually quote it. But Callie just keeps getting better... except for the nanny and 12 kids comment. That whole nanny/mothers with high-powered jobs was interesting. Not sure what else to say about that...

I like that George is growing up from his earlier 'fetus' and Bambi nicknames to be rather astute.

And Alex must be on crack to attempt a grand gesture and kiss so soon after Denny. But he handled himself well after. He just keeps getting hotter and hotter.

And something I forgot to mention last week: Sloan's "People don't come to me to fix what's on the outside. They come to me to fix what's on the inside." What a load of crap. Plastic surgery deliberately avoids fixing anything on the inside, except where accidents or trauma have caused the damage.

I'm not even going to mention Meredith... can she get any more annoying??

Fave Grey's Anatomy Quote from last night

A couple of things first... the pregnant woman, she looked a bit like Tessa Campanelli from Degrassi High. Whatever happened to her? I've seen some actors that remind me of her but I can't remember on what.

Mostly I thought last night's episode was not great (things like "You mean I could die?" and "You have to say it..." I thought those scenes were lame) and the fight was just plain stupid. And I really can't buy Burke in hipwaders: I've seen his apartment. And Meredith nearly buying McSteamy's crap? Can she get any stupider?

But the best quote was still pretty good:

Yang: That should be me. That should be my guy. I should be turning a penis into a vagina. That should be MY penis!

I love Yang.

Fave Grey's Anatomy Quote from Last Night

George to Callie: You and me, we're like ham and eggs. I was the chicken. I just want you to know that I know I was the chicken. You put yourself out there and you were committed and I just put my eggs on the plate. Not the ham because you were the pig. I was involved but you were committed --

Callie: Did you just call me a pig?

George: What I'm trying to say is I'm the pig. Now, I AM the pig... [by himself now] I am the pig.

I like Callie. I think Callie's got a good head on her shoulders, she knows what she wants and needs, calls a spade a spade, or in her case a dirty night with McSteamy dirty. She provides a nice counterpoint to dark and twisty (and stupid) Meredith.

Oh - and I love that Karev can't stay away from the gynie brigade.

Alas No New Grey's Anatomy Last Night

But there were two reruns, including the one with my favourite line from Callie, "This is high school with scalpels."

And can I just say that I don't find McDreamy remotely dreamy. He clearly has his head up his ass and he is not that intriguing, flawed but still irresistable character for me. That's becoming more and more Karev's department.

Fave Grey's Anatomy quote from last night

I really enjoyed last night's episode. I loved the stuff about Bailey and ambivalence in motherhood. And there was a lot to choose from for favourite quote. Last week, I had a hard time coming up with anything. I've narrowed down this week's selection to two:

Alex: [If I had millions of dollars] "I'd buy the Bahamas. Or at least A Bahama."

and

Callie to McSteamy: "You were sexier when you weren't talking."

* * *

Unfortunately, insomnia appears to be becoming a habit for me. Yesterday, as you can see from my post, I discovered youtube, and watched many videos of belly dancing. So when I went to bed and closed my eyes, I just kept seeing belly dancing hips, jangling coins on hip scarves, and graceful hands; or I was dancing myself (in my head, obviously).

Flashback Friday: Feminist Edition

Each week, I will tell a story that has something to do with being or becoming a woman or feminist. This series will continue until I run out of stories. Guest bloggers are welcome if you have a story you want to tell; or feel free to link to your own story in the comments.

When I was 17ish, I was friends with a pretty girl who was a raging flirt, had low tolerance for booze, and often made out with guys when parties and booze mixed. Despite her extensive snogging, she was saving her virginity for marriage and she nearly made it. She lasted until she got engaged. But that's beside the point. Anyways, back when we were 17 or thereabouts, she'd started dating a guy at another school and she maintained she was in love. We were planning to go to a party and she asked me to make sure she didn't make out with anyone there because she was in love. I tried my best to do my duty at the party but was failing as she got drunker and sillier, and a cute jock attempted to take advantage.

I kept telling her, “You're in love, remember?” Eventually, the jock turned to me and said, “Why are you so cynical?” I can't remember what prompted this line of discussion. I replied, “I don't know.” And he said, “Maybe you're a lesbian.” I guess he was getting annoyed with me that I wasn't falling under his spell and letting him get off with my friend. I'm not sure exactly what happened next; I probably left them to it. But his comment upset me. I wondered if he was right; after all I was big and butch like an Amazon, I didn't take his shit, I wasn't impressed by a popular jock boy, I hadn't had a boyfriend, I didn't like the few boys who had liked me, I was angry, I wore plaid shirts (c'mon I was 17, give me a break), the list could go on and on. I guess he was making the equation that a woman who doesn't immediately fall under the spell of a popular guy must be a manhating lesbian. Eventually, I got over it and I did meet a guy I liked who liked me back shortly after that, but still the comment lingers in my ears more than a decade later. I can't remember who the guy was but I remember what he said.

Fave Grey's Anatomy quote from last night:

"If I do die today, I don't want to be remembered as the slutty intern who dated
two doctors."

Yang: "Uhh, one doctor and one
vet."

I didn't much like last night's episode. People kept doing things I didn't want them to do. Meredith should have chosen Finn (for his name alone); Cally should have given George another chance, and she definitely shouldn't have invited McSteamy back to her hotel room. Though, who can really blame her? That man is steamy. And what's up with Izzy just getting $8.7 milion??

And there was yet another story of a woman so focused on a natural birth that she endangers the life of her child. First off, if she wanted a natural birth, why in hell did she choose the care of one of the top obstetrical
surgeons in the country? And second, are there really women like this? I wanted a natural birth but more than that I wanted to trust my caregivers' decisions and go with the flow; I didn't get a natural birth but I did achieve the latter. That storyline does nothing to help fight the overmedicalization of childbirth. Oh dear, I'm ranting again. It's just a tv show. Step away from the tv.

last night's dream

I think I've been watching too many medical dramas. Last night I dreamed that I was dating Luca Kovach from ER; well, it would be more accurate to say that Kovach was wooing me. He was quite the wine connoisseur and kept ordering me yummy glasses and bottles of wine. And Christina Yang, from Grey's Anatomy, was sort of cheering him on and trying to persuade me to give me a chance. They both ordered mussels, but I don't eat shellfish, and I couldn't find the menu to order something else for myself.

Grey's Anatomy: love-in with a but

So I have finally caught up on Grey's Anatomy and can now say I have seen every single episode. I'm still hooked. Yes, this is my fourth post about GA. I'm not ashamed. I love this show.

I love that they call sweet, naive George fetus and Bambi. I love that George is dating a hot Amazon woman and that skinny Meredith called her hot. I love that cold, calculating Christina won the hot dog eating contest by first eating the weiners, then watering the buns and squishing them into a smaller mass before eating it. I love that they had a hot dog eating contest when a world champion eater was admitted with a ruptured esophagus. I love that tough, tell it like it is Dr. Bailey has become "covered in mommy" but refuses to be mommy tracked. I love that Christina competed with the Chief of Surgery in a course on laproscopy or something like that; and that she was winning until the practical part when he wiped her ass with his eyes closed. I love that asshole Alex was the one who said exactly the right thing to Izzy when her fiance died. I love that Addison started out as Satan's whore but became a likeable human being.

Favourite Quotes:

"love means not using your girlfriend as a human shield"
"cashed in her V-card" (lost her virginity)

"covered in mommy"

"baby trumps husband?!?"
When Derek is trying to find Addison, who Bailey is treating for poison oak in a particularly... er... delicate place, he cajoes Bailey: "C'mon, I saved your husband's life."

Bailey: "She saved my baby's life."

Derek: "So... baby trumps husband?" [Bailey walks away.] "Baby trumps husband?!?"

So I love it. BUT...

But I'm troubled by the show's protrayal of Bailey's motherhood. I'm not smart enough to pull out the threads of exactly what troubles me. I just keep coming back to believing that the US needs way longer, paid maternity leave.

A few specific images stick in my mind that bug me. I know I've already posted about breasfeeding and Grey's Anatomy once but I've got more to say now that I've seen every episode. First, the scene when the Chief of Surgery gets squeamish when he notices that Bailey's breasts have leaked. This is a man who has put his hands in people's insides for what, like 30 years or something and he gets squeamish at the sight of breastmilk on a woman's shirt?!? (Now I've leaked so I know it's not fun but still). Second, the scene involving Bailey in labour. She hadn't even broken a sweat at 6 cm??

While I like the transition of Bailey getting more human, it bugs me that she calls it getting soft and that she has to blame the postpartum hormones when she's affected by a boy in brain surgery. Like I said, I can't pull the threads apart of exactly what makes me uncomfortable. I just know that it does. Anyone else?

Later: Ok. So I'm kinda sad that I have no more episodes to watch for the first time (except for tonight's). But I have just discovered something new to feed my obsession: a blog by the writers of Grey's Anatomy. Yay! I know I am so behind the times so chances are the real GA fans are already well aware of it. But if you're not, check it out.

images of bottles and breasts

A couple of weeks ago I read an article in Mothering magazine calling for a breastfeeding culture. Unfortunately the article isn't available online but there is a press release that gives the gist. The article spoke of how bottefeeding imagery has normative power and how ubiquitous those images are in advertising, baby gift wrap, on tv, and more. Although I found the article enlightening, I also found it problematic because I know women who couldn't breastfeed and still feel guilty and hurt about that. And I think we have enough maternal guilt to deal with just being a mother, never mind about how we feed our babies.

Then last night I was working my way through Grey's Anatomy Season 2 and there in episode 6 was a woman, the day after giving birth, feeding her newborn with a bottle. I think this is partly a difference between US and Canada. Seems to me that in Canada, on day 1 of a baby's life, the scene would have been a woman with a lactation consultant and a nuse trying to get that baby latched on. Or a baby just happily nursing. So I'm thinking the author of that article had a point.

I am not a militant breastfeeder. I do occasionally leave a room full of people to nurse my son, although it's more just to have a quiet moment with him and to reduce distractions than for any concern about what they might think. But I decided when he was born that I would never ever nurse him in a bathroom (except at Sears because the couches are comfortable and it's not near the toilets). I also decided I wasn't going to bother with a blanket over the shoulder thing either. So I think I may be just a bit political about breastfeeding. I have nursed him sitting at tables in restaurants, and often people didn't even notice. And I continue to believe that if someone feels uncomfortable around a nursing baby, it's their problem, not the mum's and not the baby's. Just look away... it's not that big a deal.

I remember a woman I know (we'll call her P) who breastfed but who was appalled that her friend, also a breastfeeding mother, whipped her boob out to feed her baby (this woman's words, not mine) in front of P's father and father-in-law. Who are old men and old-fashioned. Maybe that woman likes to shock people as P thought, but I also pointed out that it shouldn't matter whether other people in the room might be uncomfortable. It matters if mum and baby are comfortable. P went on, "they had to leave the room," as though this is a horrible thing. Well, I say make people leave the room if they're uncomfortable. Make people recognize that something makes them uncomfortable, and they might take a moment to wonder what's so uncomfortable about it. And maybe one or two people will change their thinking.

Maybe we do need to get out there in the public with our breastfeeding babies a bit more. And maybe some of us breastfeeding mothers need to question why we want to cover our nursing babes with a blanket. Yes, breasts are sexual. But they are also tools for nourishing and nurturing our children and I think maybe all of of us could do with some conscious reminders of that context. Maybe, as breastfeeding mothers, we should make ourselves a bit uncomfortable from time to time, because discomfort can make us question our assumptions and blind spots.

beer and ears

Last night I was continuing through the first season of Grey's Anatomy and made a sort of aural type-o. Meredith was doing her usual beginning of the show voiceover and she wonders, "Why do we put things off? Well I don't know, but I think it has something to do with beer." Wow, I thought, that is so true. Many times in my life beer has helped me procrastinate or the resulting hangover has. When she continues and is suddenly talking about fear, I realize I've misheard. But I think it should have been beer.

Surgery and snurffles

I've recently discovered Grey's Anatomy. I guess it was on too late for me before but now it's on at an earlier time. So yesterday I rented Season 1 on dvd and started watching it. It's about a bunch of surgical interns so there are lots of surgery scenes. And I found myself having flashbacks to Ezra's surgical birth. Which wasn't awful except that he was in distress and I wasn't sure we'd end up with a baby. Specifically I think I was remembering the silent time between when he was born and when I heard him cry. At the time I didn't let myself think about the baby. But it's much scarier in retrospect to consider the possibility of Ezra not being in our lives. Now that we've gotten to know his giggles, the little sounds he makes when he wakes up in the morning, how he says breathily, "Heyyyy," when Dave comes home from work and, of course, his endless smiles. I got over the flashbacks by the time I got into the third episode.

In other news, I got stung by a wasp yesterday and it really hurt. I totally don't want this to be a whiny blog but I've never had a wasp sting hurt and itch so much before. It's still itchy and sore this morning. And Ezra has a snurffly nose. It rattles when he nurses, poor guy, but otherwise his spirits remain high and he seems basically ok.
