So I finally tried on the shoes that have been calling to me every time I walk past our local shoe boutique (which is pretty much every time I walk downtown). They're on sale, they're red, they're cute, they have a size that fits me, though I can tell my heels will get shredded before I break them in; but they're really not all that functional... not comfortable enough for an everyday walking shoe, not summery enough for a South African holiday shoe, too casual for a more dress-up shoe. Should I just wait to buy shoes in South Africa, where I'll also have the memory of South Africa associated with them? Or should I just go ahead and indulge myself in a pair of shoes that could end up joining other shoes I've bought that remain virtually unworn because they're not quite comfortable enough? One point in their favour is that I can wear them with regular socks...
Vote now...

Mmmm. This is tough. They are very nice, very funky shoes, but I am at heart a pragmatist--or have become one through too many ill-fated shoe purchases.
1. Can you handle one more pair of "wear-occaisionally" shoes inside your front hallway?
2. Does See'pea grant you enough time and patience to tie shoe laces? Miss M still doesn't.
3. Can you realistically wear them to work? If not, when you are not at work and not out for long walks with Swee'pea, where can you wear them?
All that said, if I didn't have flat feet and weren't entirely dependent on orthotics and their accompanying over-priced ugly shoes, I would be a shoe fetishist. I would buy them in a heart beat.
BUT, having said that, I am all a-quiver at the thought of a shoe-shopping spree in South Africa.
Nope, no definitive advice here.
I am torn as well. My inclination would be to wait till South Africa. That being said, if you've been thinking about the shoes for over a month, and they are on sale, why not just go ahead??
My sister has a pair of keens and they are super comfy.
Difficult question. On the one hand, I'm always in favour of self-indulgence (I'm a very bad person to take on a shopping spree - I can be relied upon to talk you into an extravagant or impractical purchase). But on the other hand, I'm not a shoe person: I hate shoe shopping and comfort is pretty much my only criterion, so I'm not sure I can support the purchase of heel-shredding shoes.
Maybe play this game: if you go over to make your final decision and find that the shoes are gone, how do you feel? Relieved or disappointed?
I think if they're still calling to you after all this time, AND they are on sale, you should go for it. They do look like they might be comfy once broken in.
But I love cute shoes, so I was biased from the word "go."
BUY THEM. (as long as you can break them in)
They are cute, you love them and buying shoes on vacation can be Disastrous. (oh, and its your birthday)
I bought a pair of 'just cute' runners that I figured I would only wear for casual wear, but it turns out that now that I have broken them in I can wear them for 5 - 10 km walks and no pain....
Good luck deciding!
oooooh, toughie. Everyone makes very good points. I would repeat that shopping for shoes on vacation is not as easy as it sounds: what if you don't find anything? That said, I once bought GORGEOUS shoes in Nice on my only visit to France and was able for years afterwards to say, "Oh these? I bought them in Nice ..." Which was worth it, I think. Hm. Let us know what you do!
If today is your birthday, than buy the shoes. I love useless shoes. LUV. Too many times I have left the desirable but impractical shoes molting away in the store and regretted it....
I vote for buying them - I'm only ever sorry when I don't, not when I do.
I am a firm believer in buying shoes. All shoes. Every shoe. Must have more shoes. Do it!
In fact, I think I need those shoes too!
Oh, I will cast my vote for buying them as well. I've found that if you've been thinking about owning something like shoes for that long then you just must buy them or the thought of them will eat away at you...
